Signalling a seriousness in fulfilling one of the poll promises, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is all set to announce the draft bill for granting statehood to New Delhi on May 16.The draft being released on Monday will be made available in the public domain and will be open to suggestions and opinions, according to media reports.
For Delhi to attain full statehood, a parliamentary amendment of the NCT Act is required. As such, the AAP is expected to table the final draft of the bill in the upcoming Assembly session following which the bill will be forwarded to the Centre for parliamentary approval.
The statehood bill of Delhi has previously been tabled by former Home Minister LK Advani but failed to gather consensus.
As AAP is already at loggerheads with the Centre, the issue is bound to create a stir in the parliament. Apart from the appointment of officers and privatization of IDBI bank, control of Delhi Police has been an issue of tiff between the two.
