Arun Jaitley condemns murder of unarmed Army officer, calls it ‘dastardly act of cowardice’

ummer-fayaz_While condemning the abduction and murder of Lieutenant Umar Fayaz by terrorists in Shopian on May 10, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley expressed his condolences to the family and said the killing of the Kashmiri army officer is a “dastardly act of cowardice”.

“Umar Fayaz of 2 Rajputana Rifles was an exceptional sportsman, his sacrifice reiterates nation’s commitment to eliminate terrorism from the Valley,” the Defence Minister said.

“This young officer from J&K was a role model.”

The slain Kashmir-born 23-year-old Army Officer Lt Ummer Fayaz whose bullet-riddled body was found in Shopian had gone there to attend the wedding of a relative.

Unarmed he visited his uncle’s place at Batapura in Shopian to attend his daughter’s wedding ceremony, when he was abducted and shot dead by the militants last night.

Commanding-in-Chief of the South Western Command and Colonel of the Rajputana Rifle Lt Gen Abhay Krishna in his condolence message wrote, “This marks a watershed moment in Kashmir valley and people of Kashmir will decisively turn the tide against terrorism. I assure the family that perpetrators of this heinous crime and dastardly act will not be spared,”

Lieutenant Umar Fayaz was fresh from the National Defence Academy and was chosen for the Young Officer’s Course.
