Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the funeral of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, according to Union minister Venkaiah Naidu.
The funeral ceremony of Kalam will be held around 10.30am on 30 July. Naidu said that the “The PM would to arrive at the funeral site at 10am.”
Earlier, the mortal remains of Kalam reached his hometown Rameswaram on 29 July. The body was flown to Madurai on an IAF aircraft and later brought by a helicopter to Mandapam Camp in Ramanathapuram district.
Naidu and defence minister Manohar Parrikar accompanied the body from Delhi. Tamil Nadu ministers, including finance minister O Panneerselvam, and relatives of Kalam received the body at the Mandapam Camp.
Indian Army, IAF and Indian Navy personnel presented a Guard of Honour once the body touched down there at 2.05pm.
Later the body was taken to Rameswaram on a decorated vehicle with thousands of people lining up the road jostling to have a last glimpse of the people’s President.
The body was placed at a decorated dais near the bus stand in Rameswaram. It would be kept there till 8pm for the public to pay homage to Kalam. After 8pm, the mortal remains would be handed over to the family members.
