Amruta Patil (born 1979) is the author of the graphic novel, Kari. She grew up in Goa, and Goa is the stage on which 1999, her new novel, is set. 1999 is not a graphic novel — but a handful of pictures have inveigled their way in. “Anatomy of Excess” is an excerpt from the same. An abiding interest in education led to a teaching stint in Bangalore, and to the magazine Mindfields — which Patil co-founded and co-edits. Come January 2009, she will be tempting fate as writer-in-residence at La Maison des Auteurs (Angouleme, France), where she will work on a graphic novel based on the Mahabharata.
