Allahabad, Feb 12 (PTI): A PIL was filed today in Allahabad High Court demanding a judicial inquiry into the stampede at Allahabad Junction railway station on Sunday which claimed 36 lives and left 39 injured.

The PIL, filed by one Mahant Ratan Brahmachari, also sought lodging of cases against “erring officials” of the Railways, the police, the district administration and Kumbh Mela, followed by necessary action.

The PIL is likely to be taken up for hearing later this week.

Admitting a similar PIL, the Lucknow Bench of the High Court had earlier in the day directed the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government to file their replies.

While the state government has constituted an inquiry committee headed by the Chairman of Revenue Board, the Railways too have ordered a high-level probe into the stampede that took place while a large number of pilgrims were heading towards platform number 6 of the station to return home after taking a holy dip in the Sangam on the auspicious occasion of ‘Mauni Amavasya’.
