Kamal Vedi, the husband of Priya Vedi, the AIIMS doctor who committed suicide in a hotel in Delhi, appeared before the magistrate in Delhi and has been sentenced to 14 days in judicial custody. He has been booked under sections 498A (cruelty) and 304B (dowry death) of IPC and will remain in custody until the 4th of May.
Priya Vedi, in a long suicide note, termed her husband ‘gay’ and guilty of “immense mental torture”. The couple married five years ago with Mrs. Vedi initially accepting his sexual orientation, but coupled with other difficulties in their marriage, she felt her life deteriorating, as her Facebook posts suggest.
In a conversation with The Indian Express, Kamal Vedi’s father-in-law said:
“These things are more common today so we do not know why our daughter-in-law was so disturbed. Of course, he did not tell me he had these problems. In fact, the marriage was fixed only after he met her and gave his consent.”
He added to this that it was the responsibility of a ‘traditional Indian woman’ to make marriages work.
