Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on 25 May announced the names of four candidates for Rajya Sabha election on 11 June.
With six Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK can nominate four members; it has 134 MLAs in the assembly. Each nominee requires the backing of 34 MLAs.
They include former Union minister SR Balasubramanian. He changed loyalties in the run up to the polls.Thanjavur strongman R Vaithilingam, sitting RS member A Navaneethakrishnan, member of the legal team that handled Jayalalithaa’s wealth case A Vijayakumar.
Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK), which has 89 members in the state assembly, has nominated its spokesman TKS Elangovan and headquarters secretary RS Bharthi to the Rajya Sabha.
With this, All India Anna Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam’s (AIADMK) strength in Rajya Sabha will increase to 13, while DMK will have four members.
