The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a protest demonstration demanding the resignations of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, over their alleged help to former IPL commissioner, Lalit Modi.
They also called for resignations of HRD Minister Smriti Irani, for giving false information about her educational qualifications and daughter of late Gopinath Munde, Pankaja Munde, accused in the Rs 206 crore Chikki scam.
Already at loggerheads with the Centre, courtesy its fight against Delhi’s LG Najeeb Jung over sharing of power in administration, AAP would make a point, but avoid getting into a situation of confrontation, party sources said.
More than 500 AAP supporters congregated at Jantar Mantar on 29 June and started marching towards Parliament. Soon, a scuffle broke out between the AAP workers and police personnel, when the police personnel stopped the protest march. AAP’s Delhi unit members and some legislators were part of the protest.
The state units will stage a demonstration demanding the resignation of the four leaders. But the party is treading cautiously on this issue, sources said.
A source said, fearing a backlash, the party is not in favour of an aggressive demonstration. The government is already after us through the LG. If we go on an aggressive mode, they will make working difficult for us and start hounding us. We’ve seen the NDA government’s vengeful approach.
Following a tweet by former IPL Chief Lalit Modi, mentioning AAP leader Rahul Mehra, who sought favours to get exclusive food and beverage rights for all eight IPL stadiums for the second IPL and future seasons, has lead him to leave the party, on the defensive.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that the AAP should first introspect on issues indicting the Kejriwal government instead of pointing fingers at the central government on allegations that hold no reality.
When Arvind Kejriwal according to Yogendra Yadav knew that Tomar had a fake degree, why did he take action against him. He wanted to protect him. Now he comes up with a straight face and says ‘Oh I am so sorry, he misled me’…” BJP leader Siddharth Nath Singh told ANI.
