40 crushed to death under cooling tower platform in Jiangxi province


collapseAround 40 people were crushed to death on November 24 when a platform, which was under construction at a coal-fired power plant, collapsed in east China’s Jiangxi province.

The mishap took place in the morning located in the city of Fengcheng when a cooling tower platform dropped to the ground, trapping several people beneath it, reported state-run Xinhua news agency. Sixty-eight people were known to be to be working on the platform when it collapsed.

Rescue work was underway, and a total of 32 fire engines and 212 military personnel had been deployed to the scene, the Jiangxi provincial fire department was quoted.

The construction work on two 1,000-MW coal-fired power units began last July and likely to be on the floor by early 2018, the local Yichun city government said on social media last year.

Images from state broadcaster showed a pile of twisted metal and debris and dozens of rescue workers searching for survivors.

It may be mentioned here that in the absence of strict safety standards there have been a lot of industrial accidents in China.

The collapse of construction scaffolding at a power plant under expansion in eastern China killed more than 40 people on Thursday, state media said, the latest deadly accident in a country grappling with poor industrial safety.

Rescue workers were searching for potential survivors trapped under debris at a cooling tower that was being built, in Jiangxi province, said state broadcaster television.
