3 Nigerians hurt in attack by mob in Gr Noida, Adityanath promises action


NigeriansUnion External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on March 28 spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about an attack on Nigerian students in Greater Noida.

Promising immediate action, Swaraj spoke with Adityanath, who said a fair probe would be conducted into the incident.

In a tweet to Swaraj, a Nigerian student said living in Greater Noida has become matter of life and death after a mob attacked Nigerian students.

When hundreds of residents were marching down on March 27 in protest against the death of a Class 12 student, some of them turned violent and attacked some Nigerian students shopping in the area.

The Greater Noida police said a student, Manish Khari, was allegedly drugged by Nigerians. Khari apparently died of a cardiac arrest after a suspected drug overdose. In this regard, the police held five Nigerians for questioning, but later released them.

Three injured Nigerians were rushed to a hospital. Seven local residents have been arrested on the spot. More arrests are likely to follow. The police have also identified 54 locals who were part of the mob that beat up the Nigerians.

The police have strengthened security in areas inhabited mostly by Nigerian students.
