As many as 23 people are feared dead and several injured as a major fire broke out in Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital in Bhubaneswar on October 17 night, triggering panic among patients, attendants and hospital staff.

The cause of the fire, which began in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward, is yet to be known though many believe that it must have been a short circuit.

Around seven fire tenders have been rushed to the hospital and they are working to put out the raging fire as soon as possible before it spreads to the entire hospital.

Since most patients in ICU cannot move on their own, the focus of the rescue operations is presently on the first floor of the hospital where the ICU is located. Many of the ICU patients have since been shifted out of the hospital to safer places, as per media reports.

More details are awaited.
