2002 Hit and run case : Salman Khan gets two day interim bail till May 8

Salman Khan has been granted interim relief till May 8 on grounds of not getting the copy of the court order which sentenced him to 5 years in jail.

In a slight relief, Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been granted interim bail for two days in the infamous hit-and-run case. Earlier in the day, Additional Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande had announced the verdict at a courtroom in Mumbai, sentencing him to 5 year imprisonment. The next bail hearing in on May 8.

In the 2002 incident, one Nurullah Mehboob Sharif was killed in the accident in which Kalim Mohammed Pathan, Munna Malai Khan, Abdullah Rauf Shaikh and Muslim Shaikh were injured after Salman’s car rammed on them while they were sleeping in the open at Bandra.

According to source, before the announcement of quantum of punishment, Salman Khan’s lawyers had pleaded with the court that he be given a sentence of maximum two years, in consideration of the ‘humanitarian work’ that the star had undertaken in the past few years.

Reacting on the verdict, Btown celebrities reacts on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Karan Johar:” I can only respond emotionally just now…my thoughts and prayers are with Salman and his family today….I wish them strength….”

 Sushmita Sen: “There is an enormous difference between being a criminal and being human. True justice is then served. Keep d faith @BeingSalmanKhan.”

The Dabaang actor was charged under IPC sections 304 part II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) which attracts upto 10 years in prison; 279 (rash and negligent driving) which stipulates six months jail; 337 & 338 (causing hurt by act endangering life and causing grievous hurt respectively) with punishment up to two years, and 427 (mischief causing damage to property) with maximum punishment of upto two years.
