In yet another horrific incident, the body of a 15-year-old girl, gang-raped and murdered, was found hanging from a tree in Nanpara area of Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district on Saturday. The Bahraich police arrested two of the accused Sarvjeet Yadav (25) and Imran (26) on Sunday based on a complaint lodged by the girl’s father while a third accused, Ghanshyam Maurya, is still absconding.
The minor girl had reportedly gone missing from her house on Friday after she went to the fields to relieve herself. After a night-long search, the victim’s family found her blood-soaked body hanging from a tree. According to reports, the two accused arrested by the police, have confessed their involvement in the crime and claimed to have hanged the body after strangulation to make it appear as suicide. The family of the deceased victim has told the police that the accused had tried to abduct the girl earlier too but failed in the attempt.
The incident has triggered outrage, prompting the authorities to take swift action. Four constables have been suspended for dereliction of duty, said the police.
Superintendent of Police Salik Ram Verma was quoted as saying that post-mortem confirmed the girl was raped and later strangled.
Meanwhile, the Congress has termed the incident as ‘shameful’ and slammed the Samajwadi Party, in power in UP, and the BJP-led government at the Centre, for failing to protect women. Women activists also hit out at the Centre saying that those celebrating two years of governance need to pay attention towards curbing crime against women.
