Nice About Indians Abroad
1. THE NUMBERS
More than 25 million, making it the second largest community of people living outside their country.
Malaysia has the maximum number of Indians abroad after the US, over 20 lakh. Wonder why.
3. THE BRAVADO
There are three Indians listed in North Korea!!
4 THE ACHIEVEMENTS
V Ramakrishnan won the 2009 Chemistry Nobel. But there were Hargobind Khorana in 1968 and Amartya Sen in 1998 too.
5. THE RESPECT
Information Technology. Geeks and nerds have brought us the recognition and the moolah.
6. THE MONEY
NRIs sent $50 billion home in 2010. Two states, Punjab and Kerala, live off it almost wholly.
7. THE HYGIENE
The first noticeable change in attitude. Mineral water, no oil, more soap, less litter.
8. THE FRATERNITY
Pakistanis and Indians tend to be better neighbours outside India. There’s less jingoism.
9. THE TRAFFIC SENSE
It’s true but Indians get far better at driving than in India. They follow rules and stay sane.
10. THE HONESTY
Mostly, no bribes. Indians who are used to cutting corners at home keep it straight abroad.

2 The superiority complex
3 The sycophancy. Fear of bosses and of losing jobs
4 The regression. Suddenly, caste matters again
5 The relapse, of bad road habits
6 The brain drain
7 The Bollywood fixation
8 The fleetingness. Most have temporary visas
9 The shift. Most want to stay put
